Does your Garmin Nuvi 885T ever stop or freeze up?

Is the touchscreen on your Garmin Nuvi 885T unresponsive or has it stopped working?

As with most magic, electronic devices around us nowadays, there is a brain inside these units called ‘firmware’. Over time, for whatever reason, this firmware can become confused and stop operating the way that the Garmin Nuvi 885T did when it was new. The solution for these problems is to replace the Garmin Nuvi 885T’s internal programming and instructions with new ones, called ‘reflashing the firmware’. This is an easy, automated process prefabricated easy by downloading and running some software from the Garmin website. A discontinued product, you can still find it here.

Download their software, and then run the file. You will see this screen (except it states 4.70 now):

Click the NEXT button and you are nearly done. Follow the prompts and soon your Garmin Nuvi 885T will have all new software and should be running smoothly again. Now that you have upgraded the software of your unit, you might think about backing up your individualized data and performing a hard reset of the device.  A hard reset will clear all individual data from your Garmin Nuvi 885T, and is a suggested step when upgrading or replacing your device’s firmware.

One trick to try when your garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W  is acting up is to replace the firmware or system software of your GPS unit.  The firmware, or system software, of your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W consists of operating instructions and the procedures for starting up.  It also includes the menus and graphics that your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W displays for you to interact with it.  Maps are not a part of the firmware or system software; they are stored in a different location within the GPS.

The first step is to download the Webupdater software.

Plug in your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W GPS into your computer with the USB cord.

Does your Garmin Nuvi 885T Freeze at Loading Maps?

Does it lock up or stop working?

There are two solutions to this problem; sometimes either one repairs all problematic symptoms and sometimes they need to be used in tandem.

My previous Garmin Nuvi 885T article explained how to install new software into the device and where to get the software from. This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your ‘Favorites’ in case the hard reset erases them.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data) has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It’s generally suggested to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you’re seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good intent to do a hard reset of the unit. It’s also one of the first things that Garmin will have you do when contact tech support regarding quirky unit behavior. Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

From the Nuvi drive, copy ‘/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx’ to a backup location on your computer. After the hard reset, copy your backed up ‘current.gpx’ from your personal back to the ‘/ garmin/GPX/’ folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it ‘temp.gpx’. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from ‘temp.gpx’ into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.

Perform the Hard Reset:*Note that this will clear all individual selected settings on the unit

Power the unit off. Remove the battery and move several minutes.Install the battery.Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on. Continue to hold the screen until the “Do you want to erase all individual data?”prompt appears. Press “yes” and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and individual preferences.

If doable after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 885T.
